Things to Do in Kissimmee Besides Disney (2026)
Kissimmee Even the most park-obsessed family needs a day off from the turnstiles. Kissimmee — the area just south of Walt Disney World where a lot of vacation homes sit — has more to do than people expect, and most of it is cheaper and calmer than a park day. This guide is for families staying in the area who want a fun “rest day” that isn’t really a rest day. If you’re still figuring out where to base your trip, see our Kissimmee vacation rentals and where to stay near Disney World.
Quick picks by mood
- Animals & old Florida: Gatorland, or an airboat ride on Lake Toho.
- Water without the parks: Island H2O Water Park.
- Cheap, classic fun: Old Town’s rides, classic-car nights, and go-karts.
- A pretty stroll + dinner: Downtown Celebration or Sunset Walk.
- A real adventure day: a day trip to Kennedy Space Center.
Gatorland
A genuine old-Florida classic on the 192 corridor — part wildlife park, part roadside Americana. You’ll see alligators and crocs (including the rare leucistic “white” gators), a bird rookery, and a zipline that runs over the gator marsh if your crew is brave. It’s a half-day at most, easy on the budget, and a hit with kids who’ve had enough of lines.
Airboats on Lake Tohopekaliga
“Lake Toho” is right in Kissimmee, and an airboat ride is the most authentically Floridian thing you can do all trip — wind, sawgrass, herons, and very good odds of seeing wild alligators. Several operators run tours in the area (Wild Florida, out toward Kenansville, pairs an airboat ride with a small wildlife park). Mornings are calmer and cooler; bring sun protection.
Island H2O Water Park
A modern, app-connected water park at Sunset Walk by Margaritaville. Slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool — a great way to spend a hot afternoon if your vacation home pool isn’t quite enough. (Hours and which slides are open shift by season, so check before you drive over.)
Old Town Kissimmee
A walkable entertainment district with a small amusement area, go-karts, a Ferris wheel, and weekly classic-car cruise-ins. It’s nostalgic and a little kitschy in the best way, and you can wander it for free and just pay for the rides you want.
Downtown Celebration & Sunset Walk
Two very different strolls. Celebration is the storybook town Disney originally built — a pretty lakeside downtown with restaurants and seasonal events (it does the holidays especially well). Sunset Walk at Margaritaville is the newer, livelier option, with restaurants, a dine-in theater, and that water park next door.
Shopping & mini golf
The 192 corridor is lined with the classic Florida-vacation staples: elaborately themed mini golf courses, and outlet shopping a short drive north (Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets). Easy, low-commitment afternoons.
Worth the drive: day trips
- Kennedy Space Center (about an hour east) — a genuinely awe-inspiring full day, rockets and all. The best non-park day on this list for older kids and adults.
- ICON Park on International Drive (about 25 minutes) — The Wheel observation wheel and a cluster of attractions.
- Universal Orlando — if your crew wants a change of theme-park scenery.
The practical takeaway
You don’t need to fill every day with $150 park tickets. Mix one or two of these into your week — an airboat morning, a water-park afternoon, a Celebration dinner — and the whole trip feels less like a marathon. It’s also a lot easier to do when you’re staying in a vacation home near Disney with a kitchen and a pool to come home to.
